Who’s afraid of William Shakespeare ?

Over the centuries countless specialists have written countless pages to comment on the texts of William Shakespeare (1564-1616), giving the impression that his plays are beyond the reach of the average individual. Yet at the time, the rich and the poor, the educated and the illiterate, whatever their social class, flocked to see Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth and the other plays, without giving a second thought to the complexities of the text. I will argue that there is no reason for believing that today Shakespeare is only for the élite. Shakespeare is for all!
