A l’occasion de la JEL 2021, la Maison de l’Internationale, Jardin de ville \u00e0 Grenoble, a organis\u00e9 une soir\u00e9e Po\u00e9sie, sur le th\u00e8me des Retrouvailles. Nous avons pu entendre des po\u00e8mes en Grec, en Russe, en Arm\u00e9nien et m\u00eame en Japonais.<\/p>\n

Pour l’Alliance-Grenoble-Oxford, c’est Susan Blatt\u00e8s qui a r\u00e9cit\u00e9 un po\u00e8me de Stevie Smith, Away Melancholy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stevie Smith: \u201cAway, Melancholy\u201d (from the collection Scorpion and Other Poems<\/em>, 1972)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The writer Stevie Smith was born Florence Margaret Smith in 1902 in the North of England although she spent most of her life in London, brought up by an aunt. She lived there until her death in 1971. She published several collections of poetry and three novels but worked as a secretary for most of her life. Even if she is not very well-known outside poetry circles, critics recognize the unique style and mood of her poetry which combines the serious with the humorous, simple with more profound ideas. Her work can, therefore, be somewhat disconcerting.<\/p>\n

I chose this particular poem because it mixes simple ideas expressed in simple form with other ideas expressed in a much more intricate way. Some aspects of the poem recall song: the repetition of \u201cAway, melancholy\u201d with variations acts as a chorus to the verses. There are other types of repetition too and many different types of rhyme. Some of the verses are very short and straightforward, whilst the two in the middle are much longer and more complex in structure and in meaning.<\/p>\n

It is the subject of the poem that really caught my attention: the celebration of life and nature despite everything (death, illness, suffering). It is this celebration of life and love which makes it fitting to the theme of tonight\u2019s poetry. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Stevie Smith\u00a0: \u201cAway, Melancholy\u201d (du recueil Scorpion and Other Poems<\/em>, 1972)<\/strong><\/p>\n

L\u2019auteure Stevie Smith est n\u00e9e Florence Margaret Smith en 1902 dans le nord de l\u2019Angleterre, mais elle a pass\u00e9 presque toute sa vie \u00e0 Londres, \u00e9lev\u00e9e par sa tante. Elle a v\u00e9cu dans la m\u00eame maison jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort en 1971. Elle a publi\u00e9 plusieurs recueils de po\u00e9sie et trois romans, tout en travaillant comme secr\u00e9taire. Elle est peu connue en dehors des connaisseurs de po\u00e9sie, mais les sp\u00e9cialistes sont d\u2019accord pour saluer une voix unique o\u00f9 le s\u00e9rieux et l\u2019humour, les id\u00e9es simples et les id\u00e9es plus profondes se c\u00f4toient.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai choisi ce po\u00e8me pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment parce qu\u2019il m\u00e9lange le simple et le complexe. D\u2019une certaine fa\u00e7on, le po\u00e8me ressemble \u00e0 une chanson avec \u00ab\u00a0Away, Melancholy\u00a0\u00bb r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9 avec variations comme refrain. On note plusieurs types de r\u00e9p\u00e9tition et de rimes. Le po\u00e8me comporte des strophes tr\u00e8s courtes tandis que les deux strophes au milieu sont beaucoup plus longues et denses.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est surtout \u00e0 cause du sujet, que j\u2019ai choisi ce po\u00e8me\u00a0: la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration de la vie et de la nature malgr\u00e9 tout (mort, maladie, souffrance). Ce po\u00e8me est un hymne \u00e0 la vie et \u00e0 l\u2019amour et ainsi convient tout \u00e0 fait au th\u00e8me de cette soir\u00e9e de po\u00e9sie.<\/p>\n
