ELISE :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My trip in OXFORD from the 17th of January 2024 to the 30th <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the 13th April 2023, Linet contacted me by mail and asked my agreement to become her bilingual DUO. I said \u201cYES\u201d joyously !    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, she arranged some meetings on ZOOM, half in English and half in French, in order to \u2018become tame\u2019 (s\u2019apprivoiser in French) as The Little Prince tames the fox, in Saint Exup\u00e9ry\u2019s book.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, I was more and more impatient to meet my two English partners Linet and Robert, visit Oxford, and follow Shakespeare\u2019s traces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Friday<\/strong> was the trigger factor, offering a train return ticket for 120 euros,  valid only in January or in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here was I in London on the 17th January 2024. Trafalgar Square ponds were frozen. I had a look at Nelson who was shivering. Me too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days later, I was waiting for Linet in OXFORD at the Black sheep Coffee<\/strong>. Linet arrived by bike. We gave a hug and immediately she offered me a tasty chocolate with fresh milk. We were comfortable and were chatting freely.  I felt an immediate familiarity associated with a feeling of trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And quickly, here were we, in OXFORD\u2019s crowded streets. Linet, was leading me to the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is the spiritual heart of the oldest university in Britain. Then, we were climbing the 127 steps of the Gothic style thirteenth century tower, up to the top, admiring the beautiful carved gargoyles. At the top, Linet described the magnificent view of OXFORD\u2019s 43 colleges. I felt a bit lost. Kindly, she drew a schema on my notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, Linet showed me Oxford\u2019s medieval city wall, which dates from the first half of the thirteenth century and also this unique historic space, including Christ Church College where she was studying and Christ Church Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About one o\u2019clock, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Vaults & Garden Cafe (local and organic food) in the oldest Congregation House next to the University Church, some tempehs and rice for Linet and some cheese, potatoes and vegetables for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks a lot Linet. Maybe, this summer we\u2019ll meet again in Grenoble ! I hope so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LINET :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 ravie lorsqu’\u00c9lise a accept\u00e9 d’\u00eatre ma partenaire pour le duo bilingue. C’\u00e9tait amusant de se rencontrer sur Zoom, de parler en fran\u00e7ais et en anglais et de faire connaissance. \u00c9lise est une personne tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressante, engag\u00e9e dans plein d’activit\u00e9s diff\u00e9rentes. C’\u00e9tait encore mieux quand \u00c9lise est venue visiter Oxford et que nous nous sommes rencontr\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9lise est clairement aventureuse, non seulement voyageant seule, explorant diff\u00e9rents endroits en Angleterre, mais allant aussi au th\u00e9\u00e2tre pour voir une pi\u00e8ce compliqu\u00e9e en anglais. Elle a visit\u00e9 Stratford-upon-Avon, en raison de son amour pour Shakespeare, ainsi que Londres et Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’aime toujours faire visiter Oxford, car cela me fait appr\u00e9cier la beaut\u00e9 de la ville que je consid\u00e8re habituellement comme allant de soi. \u00c9lise \u00e9tait pleine d’\u00e9nergie et ne se laissait pas intimider par les 127 marches du clocher de l’\u00e9glise. Elle ne s’est jamais plainte du temps horrible \u2013 il faisait froid et il pleuvait par intermittence le jour o\u00f9 nous avons explor\u00e9 Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’attends avec impatience notre prochaine rencontre \u2013 peut-\u00eatre \u00e0 Grenoble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ROBERT :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s six mois de correspondance par courrier \u00e9lectronique et de conversations en ligne via Zoom, j’ai eu le grand plaisir de rencontrer Elise Bedot pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 Oxford lors de sa visite en Angleterre en janvier. Nous nous sommes retrouv\u00e9s au centre-ville, \u00e0 Carfax. La premi\u00e8re chose que nous avons faite a \u00e9t\u00e9 d’aller dans un caf\u00e9 pour prendre une tasse de th\u00e9 et discuter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous sommes all\u00e9s au caf\u00e9 de la librairie Blackwells dans Broad Street et elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 surprise de trouver un caf\u00e9 dans une librairie o\u00f9 l’on pouvait prendre un caf\u00e9, un th\u00e9 ou un chocolat et manger des p\u00e2tisseries. Il y avait des tables et des chaises, mais aussi des fauteuils o\u00f9 l’on pouvait s’asseoir et lire un livre ou un journal, ou simplement regarder le monde passer. Aujourd’hui, c’est normal dans les grandes librairies d’Angleterre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Une fois nos boissons termin\u00e9es, nous avons parcouru la courte distance qui nous s\u00e9pare du mus\u00e9e Ashmolean, situ\u00e9 dans la rue Beaumont. Le b\u00e2timent lui-m\u00eame a environ 100 ans, mais le mus\u00e9e, qui fait partie de l’universit\u00e9 d’Oxford, a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9 en 1683 par M. Elias Ashmole, qui lui a donn\u00e9 son nom. Nous avons d\u00e9jeun\u00e9 dans l’un des deux restaurants de l’endroit et avons visit\u00e9 les galeries d’art, qui regorgent de peintures de nombreux pays, avec une belle collection d’\u0153uvres italiennes de la Renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beaumont Street (la rue Beaumont) doit son nom au palais de Beaumont, qui se trouvait \u00e0 cet endroit au Moyen \u00c2ge et qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit en 1130 par le roi Henri Ier, \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 les rois anglais parlaient fran\u00e7ais. Il \u00e9tait construit sur une petite colline, d’o\u00f9 le nom de Beau Mont.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deux jours plus tard, Elise est venue en bus, \u00e0 une heure de route, dans le village o\u00f9 j’habite, et je l’ai pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e \u00e0 ma femme Angela. Nous sommes all\u00e9s tous les trois d\u00e9jeuner \u00e0 Woodstock et, apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9jeuner, nous avons visit\u00e9 le palais de Blenheim, juste \u00e0 l’ext\u00e9rieur de la ville de Woodstock, \u00e0 environ 15 km au nord d’Oxford et non loin de l’endroit o\u00f9 j’habite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le palais a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit en 1708, cadeau de la Reine et du Parlement \u00e0 John Marlborough, le commandant de l’arm\u00e9e britannique qui a vaincu une arm\u00e9e fran\u00e7aise en 1704 en Bavi\u00e8re, sur les rives du Danube. Il s’agit du plus grand palais du Royaume-Uni appartenant \u00e0 un particulier et non au roi. En 1874, Sir Winston Churchill, un descendant de John Marlborough, mais qui n’a pas h\u00e9rit\u00e9 du duch\u00e9, est n\u00e9 \u00e0 Blenheim Palace et nous avons visit\u00e9 la chambre o\u00f9 il est n\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La biblioth\u00e8que du palais contenait de nombreux livres fran\u00e7ais provenant de la collection d’un des pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents ducs qui s’int\u00e9ressait \u00e0 la litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il a fait tr\u00e8s froid et venteux toute la journ\u00e9e et il a plu presque toute la journ\u00e9e, mais nous avons tout de m\u00eame pass\u00e9 un bon moment ensemble et nous avons mis Elise dans le bus pour retourner \u00e0 Oxford \u00e0 la fin de la journ\u00e9e. Nous attendons avec impatience la prochaine visite d’Elise au Royaume-Uni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
