Visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/visit.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/chaucer\">Chaucer Here and Now | Visit the Bodleian Libraries (ox.ac.uk)<\/a>.&nbsp; Copies of richly illuminated medieval manuscripts are amongst the numerous exhibits that show the importance of Chaucer\u2019s work to the development of English literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was the son of a wealthy London vintner who rose to occupy various high offices of state, including Justice of the Peace and knight of the shire for Kent.&nbsp; He was its Member of Parliament.&nbsp; He travelled widely in France and Italy as a diplomat.&nbsp; He was influenced by French poetry as well as, especially, by the work of Italian poets like Boccaccio and Petrarch.&nbsp; He chose, however, to write in English at a time when court poetry was predominantly written in Anglo-Norman and Latin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Included in the exhibition are the oldest existing manuscript of the <em>Canterbury Tales (<\/em>the <em>Hengwrt Chaucer <\/em>from the National Library of Wales), a very rare copy of William Caxton\u2019s early printed first edition (1476-77) and the more colourful second edition with woodcut illustrations (1483).&nbsp; The beautiful <em>Kelmscott Chaucer<\/em> (1896) by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, major figures of the Arts &amp; Crafts Movement and Pre-Raphaelites, provides another highlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He wrote a wide body of works, including the scientific <em>A Treatise on the Astrolabe <\/em>for his son, demonstrating that he was a major figure in the emerging European Renaissance.&nbsp; The exhibition focuses mainly, however, on the <em>Canterbury Tales.&nbsp; <\/em>Its fame rests on the fact that it gave voice to a range of English characters from 14<sup>th<\/sup> century, including the infamous Wife of Bath, whose earthy no-nonsense view of life has resonated through the ages.&nbsp; Variously seen as scandalous or as an early feminist, the more colourful elements of her tale are sanitised in versions of the work published in 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries, when the British Empire lionised this great national genius along with Shakespeare and when children\u2019s editions evoked a sentimental <em>merrie olde England<\/em> of the past.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cambridge Guide to Literature sums up his work as follows, \u201cChaucer\u2019s blend of humour, realism, philosophical depth, poetic virtuosity, and masterful control of dialogue and character was never matched.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaucer was buried in Westminster Abbey in a spot that later led to the development of Poets\u2019 Corner, where today are also commemorated, and sometimes buried, over 100 writers, amongst them the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bronte.org.uk\/bronte-200\/join-the-bronte-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bront\u00eb<\/a> sisters, Dickens and Handel.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An article written by Colin Bloxham <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/grenoble-oxford.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Chaucer-fdv2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grenoble-oxford.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Chaucer-fdv2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grenoble-oxford.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Chaucer-fdv2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/grenoble-oxford.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Chaucer-fdv2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/grenoble-oxford.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Chaucer-fdv2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/grenoble-oxford.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Chaucer-fdv2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Geoffrey Chaucer\u2019s life, c.1343 \u2013 1400, and his world-famous Canterbury Tales are celebrated in a magnificent exhibition in Oxford\u2019s Weston<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2289,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2292","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-a-la-une"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.9.1 -
