Une conf\u00e9rence in\u00e9dite pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par Karine Madrigal, \u00e9gyptologue, professeure de civilisation \u00e9gyptienne \u00e0 l’UIAD, charg\u00e9e de l’inventaire et de l’\u00e9tude des archives Champollion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  L’exp\u00e9dition militaire du g\u00e9n\u00e9ral Bonaparte en Egypte (1798) est une catastrophe. Par contre, la commission des sciences et des arts compos\u00e9e de 167 savants, qui l’accompagne r\u00e9alise une description compl\u00e8te de l’Egypte avec des planches en couleur qui font r\u00eaver le monde entier. Mais les hi\u00e9roglyphes, l’\u00e9criture de cette civilisation oubli\u00e9e, enfouie dans les sables, reste un myst\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En septembre 1822, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Champollion \u00ab tient son affaire \u00bb ! et pr\u00e9sente au monde savant sa m\u00e9thode de d\u00e9chiffrement connue sous le nom de Lettre \u00e0 M. Dacier<\/em>. La lecture de sa m\u00e9thode, en s\u00e9ance publique \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie royale des inscriptions et belles lettres de Paris, est faite en pr\u00e9sence de Thomas Young de passage \u00e0 Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quelles \u00e9taient les relations entre Champollion et Young ? Y avait-il une rivalit\u00e9 entre le savant fran\u00e7ais et le savant anglais ? Quels ont \u00e9t\u00e9 les apports de Thomas Young dans le processus du d\u00e9chiffrement ? Et quelle a \u00e9t\u00e9 sa r\u00e9action au moment du d\u00e9chiffrement par Champollion ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La conf\u00e9rence se propose de revenir sur la rivalit\u00e9 franco-anglaise qui conduira \u00e0 la prise de la pierre de Rosette<\/em>, objet majeur car l\u2019une des cl\u00e9s du d\u00e9chiffrement. Elle esquissera le parcours des deux protagonistes en mettant en parall\u00e8le les recherches men\u00e9es sur les syst\u00e8mes graphiques des anciens \u00c9gyptiens. Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments permettront de mieux cerner les rapports qu\u2019entretenaient les deux hommes durant la course au d\u00e9chiffrement puis apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9chiffrement en 1822.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cela permettra de montrer, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la reprise de la documentation \u00e0 sa source, que tout n\u2019est pas aussi tranch\u00e9 que ce que l\u2019on a pu en dire et de nuancer cette rivalit\u00e9 tant d\u00e9crite par de nombreux auteurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
