La Chanson de Roland, texte \u00e9crit et enregistr\u00e9 par Sue Baines dans le duo Sue\/Philippe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Les duos bilingues sont une nouvelle opportunit\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e en 2020\/2021, en pleine p\u00e9riode de pand\u00e9mie du Covid19. C’est notre jumelage, plus que trentenaire, entre AGO et OGA qui nous a permis de trouver rapidement une trentaine de personnes int\u00e9ress\u00e9es \u00e0 dialoguer en Fran\u00e7ais et en Anglais. L’utilisation de la vid\u00e9o conf\u00e9rence Zoom, nous permet de nous affranchir des r\u00e8gles sanitaires ou des difficult\u00e9s pour voyager. Lors de votre adh\u00e9sion annuelle (15\u20ac\/an) si vous d\u00e9sirez participer \u00e0 ces duos bilingues, vos coordonn\u00e9es, vos centres d’int\u00e9r\u00eats et votre niveau d’Anglais sont rapidement int\u00e9gr\u00e9s \u00e0 nos fichiers. Notre duo Sue\/Philippe est maintenant constitu\u00e9 depuis plusieurs mois. Nous nous donnons rendez-vous par Zoom, tous les quinze jours. Nous \u00e9changeons pendant une heure, 30 minutes en Anglais, trente minutes en Fran\u00e7ais. Au tout d\u00e9but, une certaine timidit\u00e9 nous faisait parler des petits-enfants, des animaux de compagnie ou du temps de la saison. Nous pr\u00e9parons maintenant nos \u00e9changes sur des sujets tr\u00e8s vari\u00e9s. Derni\u00e8rement, Sue a voulu me parler en Fran\u00e7ais d’une \u00e9mission \u00e9cout\u00e9e \u00e0 la radio sur The song of Roland. Je lui ai demand\u00e9 ce travail suppl\u00e9mentaire, d’\u00e9crire un texte sur le sujet et de l’enregistrer. The Song of Roland<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Recently, while looking for something to listen to on my way to and from the supermarket, I came across a radio programme about the medieval French text of The Song of Roland. Unlike many French people, I had never studied this text either at school or at university, so I knew practically nothing about it. I still haven\u2019t read the text, but from the discussion on the radio programme, I learnt quite a lot not only about the legendary story of Roland, but also about the history of that era.
\nThe song tells story of the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778 AD, when part of Charlemagne’s invading army was ambushed and his knight Roland fought and died. Although these events took place in the eighth century, the earliest written version of it was found by chance in 1830 in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Scholars do not know exactly when this manuscript was written or by whom, but estimate it to date from the first half of the 12th century. It was written in the dialect of French used in England at that time by the nobility, who were descended from the Norman conquerors of 1066. Of course, before that the story would have been told and retold in the oral tradition, or most probably sung as a chanson de geste.
\nWithout going into detail about the story itself, what I found most interesting in the discussion was the way it pulled together certain things I already half-knew about the history of that period, not long after the Muslim conquest of Spain, when Charlemagne ruled a large part of Europe. History tells us that the battle of Roncevaux Pass was fought in the Pyrenees between Charlemagne\u2019s Frankish army and an army of the native Basques, who were mainly pagans. The Song of Roland, however, portrays the conflict as one between Christians and Muslims, which is one reason why scholars believe that this version was written after the first Crusade in the 11th century.
